Sandpiper Sprint 5k
April 6, 2024 @ 8:00 am - 11:00 am
ALABAMA AUDUBON is pleased to announce the first annual Sandpiper Sprint on April 6, 2024. Presented by the Baldwin County Sewer Service (BCSS), proceeds from the course-certified 5K race will directly benefit Alabama Audubon’s Coastal Stewardship Program, the headquarters for which is established in Baldwin County.
“BCSS celebrates its 26th year of environmental stewardship by sponsoring the Inaugural Alabama Audubon Sandpiper Sprint. Alabama Audubon is an important environmental partner working through their community programs to help the coastal bird habitat recover and become more resilient. ”
—Gerry McManus, BCSS Controller
More than a race, the event will serve as a celebration of the birds that depend on the unique and vital habitats only found in Baldwin County and along the Alabama coast—birds that are dependent on the health of area ecosystems for survival.
“We are very grateful to BCSS for sponsoring this fundraiser for our organization, and also to our hosts at the City of Summerdale! Proceeds from the Sandpiper Sprint will be invested into research and education centered on Alabama’s coastal birds. It is a special opportunity to spread our message that Alabama’s birdlife is amazing and deserves our protection.”
—Dr. R. Scot Duncan, Alabama Audubon Executive Director
Hosted by the City of Summerdale, the 5K starts at $25 and registration is open to individuals of all ages. Participation through racing or crowd-support provides an opportunity to socialize outdoors while supporting the work that protects the exceptional birds that call Baldwin County home. Registration and event information can be found at ALAUDUBON.ORG/EVENT.
ABOUT ALABAMA AUDUBON’S COASTAL STEWARDSHIP PROGRAM
Founded in 1927, Alabama Audubon is Alabama’s oldest conservation nonprofit and its mission is to promote conservation and a greater knowledge of birds, their habitats, and the natural world. The Alabama Coastal Bird Stewardship Program / ALCBSP has provided critical protection and monitoring for our state’s sensitive beach-nesting bird populations since 2017. Administered by Alabama Audubon staff at its Birmingham headquarters and coastal field office in Daphne, the ALCBSP utilizes local volunteers to monitor and enhance the breeding success of several species of concern on the beaches of Mobile and Baldwin Counties.
