Baldwin County Sewer Service, LLC (BCSS) recently began the process of expanding the wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) in Lillian, Alabama.

The wastewater utility company proposes to improve the sewer system in southeast Baldwin County by increasing the treatment plant’s capacity, in addition to updating the treatment process to ultraviolet (UV) disinfection.

As part of the new expansion, BCSS crews must install a ten inch treated water effluent line. The path of the new line would travel mainly along County Road 91, and additional roads include Sunset Drive, County Road 93 and Highway 98 in Lillian. BCSS is working on this project closely with the Alabama Department of Environmental Management (ADEM) and the Baldwin County Highway Department. When the extension is complete, the latest effluent line would range from BCSS’ current wastewater treatment plant on Caney Loop to Narrow Gap Creek on the north end of County Road 91.

We are doubling the Lillian WWTP’s daily capacity, which will be most helpful when handling wastewater and rain water during heavy rain events,” said Jenny Williams of Baldwin County Sewer Service. “We are also excited about implementing a new UV disinfection system, which can be better for the environment than a chlorine disinfection system.

The Lillian WWTP processes wastewater from areas of Elberta, Perdido Beach and Lillian. BCSS operates two other WWTPs in Baldwin County, in Malbis and in Gulf Shores. BCSS is aiming to enhance the wastewater treatment plant as soon as possible, and the public will be updated on the progress of this endeavor.
