Baldwin County Charity to Build Home for Injured War Veteran

BCSS is  sponsoring The Baldwin County Home Builders Association (BCHBA) Foundation’s Home for a Hero project that is focused on giving back to those who have given their all for our community and country. The first project is to build a new handicap accessible home for an injured Daphne war veteran & his family.  The BCHBA needs more contributions to reach their goal of breaking ground on the home in December 2015, so please consider helping this amazing cause.  Read more below for full details.

An injured Iraq and Afghanistan War veteran from Daphne, AL will soon be getting a new home for his family.  That’s thanks to the Baldwin County Home Builders Association’s charitable foundation.  Their Home for a Hero project is focused on giving back to those who have given their all for our community and country.   [su_custom_gallery source=”media: 1558″ limit=”100″ link=”lightbox” width=”200″ height=”200″ title=”never” class=”right”][su_custom_gallery source=”media: 1558″ limit=”100″ link=”lightbox” width=”200″ height=”200″ title=”never” class=”right”][su_custom_gallery source=”media: 420″ link=”lightbox” width=”200″ height=”200″ title=”never” class=”right”](Slideshow of photos or Photo Gallery)[/su_custom_gallery]

“This is the climbing tree for the kids,” said Paul Douglas Rains of Daphne who goes by P. D.

Rains will soon be able to offer his children something that he may never have been able to; a comfortable home to call their own on five acres of land in central Baldwin County.  Married with four young daughters, Rains story caught the attention of the Baldwin County Home Builder’s Association.

“He’s truly an American hero.  He’s a Daphne hero and we’re just proud to be able to serve him like he served us,” said Mike Henriksen, president of the Baldwin County Home Builders Association.

P. D. served as a combat soldier in both Iraq and Afghanistan.  On his second tour, he suffered serious injuries to the whole right side of his body from an Improvised Explosive Device.  His recovery went better than many expected and he returned to the work-force back at home.  Unfortunately, he’s experienced some recent set-backs that have forced him to quit working.

“After I got injured, I got to a point where that was as good as I could get and I started declining a little faster than I thought it would do,” Rains said.

Rain’s situation was brought to the attention of the Baldwin County Home Builders Association at a point where they were trying to decide on community service projects.  The Association has always been service oriented, but when they heard P. D.’s story they decided they could do more.

“We’re making this house for him.  It will be a slab-level house.  It will have easy entry ways.  We’re making it handicap accessible so that as time goes on, if he has that need for it for his injuries, he’ll be able to maneuver throughout the house easily and care for himself,” Henriksen explained.

P. D., his wife Jessica and two of their daughters met at the five acre piece of property that was donated to the charity.  They got to look over plans for the house and walk around the place thinking about what’s to come.

“I’m ecstatic for the community doing this.  I don’t know how to thank everybody for what they’re doing.  The kids are ecstatic and I just don’t know how to say how happy we are,” Rains said.

Much has been done, but there’s plenty left to do before work begins.  The Home for a Hero program hopes to generate enough contributions to not only cover the cost of this home, but others in the future.

The Baldwin County Home Builder’s Association hopes to break ground by December 1, 2015 and have the home completed within four months.  If you want to contribute to this project or others in the future, you’re asked to contact their Fairhope office.
